The Brew Guide

Your first pour-over

Use this as a starting point for a cone-style dripper. Your coffee, filter, and brewer may call for adjustments. Follow your equipment's instructions.

Gather your tools

A dripper, a matching paper filter, a cup or server, a kettle, a scale, and a timer.

A simple starting recipe

  • 20 g coffee, ground medium to medium-coarse
  • 320 g hot water: a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio
  1. Place the filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. Discard the rinse water, add your coffee, and reset the scale.
  2. Start the timer. Pour 40 g water over the grounds and let them bloom for about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour gently over the coffee in small rounds until the scale reaches 320 g. Let the water drain, remove the dripper, and enjoy.

Make it yours

A sharp, underdeveloped cup may benefit from a slightly finer grind. For a bitter or heavy cup, try a little coarser. Change one variable at a time and let taste guide you.
